Stop the Drip in Steel Buildings

Pole Barn & Workshop Insulation is for the steel and wood outbuildings that dot the townships around Grand Rapids, from Alpine and Sparta to Caledonia and Byron. A bare steel roof cools fast at night, warm moist air inside condenses on it, and water drips onto tools, equipment and anything stored below. In winter the same steel lets heat out as fast as a heater puts it in.

Why closed-cell foam fits steel

Closed-cell foam sticks directly to metal panels and framing, insulates at about R-5 to R-7 per inch (HomeGuide) and keeps moist air from reaching the cold steel, so the condensation stops. It also seals the gaps along purlins, girts and the eaves where wind blows in, and adds a little rigidity to the panels.

Heated shops and unheated storage

If you plan to heat the building, walls and roof both get foam at a thickness sized for comfort. For an unheated building where the goal is just to stop condensation, a thinner coat on the roof may do. We explain the options and price them separately.

Older wood barns

Older wood-sided outbuildings can be insulated too, but gaps in board siding and open eaves need sealing, and anything that holds hay or livestock needs ventilation planned in. We tell you what makes sense for how you use the building.

Permits

Rules vary by township. Alpine Township, for example, lists sheds over 200 square feet among the projects that need a building permit. If insulation is part of a new or converted building, we fit our work into its inspections.

Snow load and roof condition

Grand Rapids-area roofs carry a lot of snow, about 75.6 inches in an average year, and a steel roof that leaks at a fastener will soak whatever is under it. Before we spray, we look for loose or rusted screws, damaged panels and gaps at the ridge and eaves. Foam can seal small gaps, but a leaking roof should be fixed first so water does not run behind the foam where you cannot see it.

Doors, eaves and ventilation

Big overhead and sliding doors are usually the largest openings in a pole barn, and foam does not seal them. We insulate around the door framing and tell you where weatherstripping or an insulated door would help. If the building houses animals, fuel-burning heaters or anything that gives off moisture, it still needs ventilation once it is sealed, and we plan for that.

Pole Barn & Workshop Insulation Questions

Will spray foam stop my pole barn from dripping?

Closed-cell foam on the steel keeps warm, moist air from reaching it, which stops most condensation.

How thick should foam be on a pole barn?

For condensation control on an unheated building, about an inch is common; heated shops need more. We size it to your use.

Can you foam over a vapor barrier or bubble wrap?

Foam should go on clean steel or framing. Loose wraps are usually removed first.

Is foam in a barn a fire concern?

Foam in occupied buildings usually needs an ignition or thermal barrier. Requirements depend on use; we tell you what applies.
